Chiropractic Care for Women’s Health
The nervous system has been studied since ancient Egypt. The Egyptians knew of the significance of the spinal fluid, and wrote about various aspects of the nervous system in the medical papers of their time. Thousands of years of medical improvements have brought modern scientists to the same understanding: the nervous system plays a crucial role in many of the body’s functions. Particularly in women, the function of the nervous system and the movement of spinal fluids in the body can influence infertility, menstrual disorders, and pregnancy issues.
Infertility is the inability to contribute to reproduction. It can affect both men and women, and is usually treated by risky chemical medicines that have endless side effects.
As the nervous system plays a key role in all of the body’s functions, correctly working nerves may play a role in the body’s fertility. The nerves associated with the reproductive system exit at the lumbar spine, which is the most common site of back pain and pinched nerves. If you are infertile, talk to your chiropractor; as chiropractic care may be all you need to allow your body to function normally.
The majority of women experience painful cramps during menstruation. Cramps usually affect the abdomen and pelvis, but severe cramps may cause pain in the lower back and legs as well.
These cramps can also be caused by the physical act of menstruation. As the lining of the uterus separates from the wall, it releases chemicals which can starve the uterus of oxygen. Too little oxygen in any muscle can cause cramps and pain.
A healthy spinal column is key to a healthy body. When the spinal column is out of whack, many women can experience subluxations of the vertebrae, which can cause unnecessary cramps and pain during menstruation. Chiropractic treatment helps to realign the spine and correct these subluxations; and can effectively relieve the pain.
Women are also much more likely to develop back pain during pregnancy. In fact, roughly half of pregnant women suffer from a condition called sacroiliac joint dysfunction, also known as subluxation. Hormones released during pregnancy act to relax the muscles, joints, and ligaments in the woman’s body. This is a necessary function, as it is this relaxing effect which allows the pelvis to open during delivery so the baby’s head and shoulders can pass through.
However, add to this the normal weight gained during pregnancy, the stretching of the stomach muscles, and changes in posture caused by pregnancy, and you have a recipe for subluxations during pregnancy. This dysfunction causes pain and extra stress on the joints, nerves, and discs of the back and pelvis. As it is advised for pregnant women not to take unnecessary pain medications, it is good to know that most subluxations caused by pregnancy can be easily treated with chiropractic care.
Subluxations during pregnancy may also cause the baby to develop in a breech presentation. A chiropractic technique known as the Webster Technique can actually help to relieve stress on the pregnant woman’s pelvis, allowing the uterus to relax. This relaxed uterus makes it much easier for the baby to get into the normal birthing position.
All of these chiropractic techniques provide women with non-surgical and medication-free options to help relieve pain and alleviate some of the symptoms associated with various women’s issues.
