Do you really have Sciatica - Pacific Beach
Do you really have Sciatica?
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica and ChiropracticThere it is again! It’s that funny (not so funny) pain going from your backside right down the back of your leg. Sometimes all the way to your ankle. You feel it the most when you first get up in the morning. It used to come and go much of the time. Lately, however, it’s there more often. Truth be told, the pain and discomfort is a beginning to concern you.
Do you have sciatica?
First of all, what is sciatica? The term comes from the name of a nerve – the sciatic nerve. This is what you might call your monster nerve. It’s actually the longest nerve in your entire body. Since it travels half the length of your body, it’s no wonder it can cause monster problems.
The sciatic nerve originates at the back of the pelvis, from there it travels down through the hip area and buttocks into each leg. That sounds simple enough, but from there it splits off up to do double duty!
Near the knee, this monster nerve becomes two nerves – one is called the tibial the other is the peroneal nerves. The first one runs behind the knee and second runs along the side of the calf and ankle. These two – still attached to the main nerve, remember – are responsible for the actions of many muscles in your lower leg. They even enable feeling in the thighs, legs and feet.
Understanding how much this nerve can do when healthy, is it any wonder it can cause so much discomfort when problems arise?
If you suffer from leg pain, it may or may not be sciatica – but sciatica will definitely cause leg pain. Sufferers list symptoms such as:
Pain in the rear or leg that is worse when sitting
Burning or tingling down the leg
Weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot
A constant pain on one side of the rear
A shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up
The pain itself can range from just a little bothersome discomfort to throbbing, to extreme, almost unbearable pain.
Keep in mind that sciatica, as such, is not a disorder but rather a symptom. The symptoms listed above are usually caused by a combination of pressure and inflammation on the nerve root, and treatment is centered on relieving both of these factors.
Early Attention = Early Resolution
Pain, no matter what the cause, is the body relaying urgent messages to you. Learn to listen to your body and respond. Ignoring symptoms is a sure way of exacerbating them. Early attention will mean earlier resolution.
Since chiropractors are often recognized as experts in the area of low back problems, you may want to begin there. Because chiropractic treatments deal specifically with the spine, and because the nervous system is so intimately related to the spine, relief from the pain could be effected simply by reducing the pressure on the sciatic nerve. A chiropractic exam will let you know for sure!
