Frozen Shoulder – Why can’t I lift my arm?
Author – Dr. Ryan Curda D.C. - Pacific Beach Chiropractic Center
Frozen Shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis as it’s called in the medical profession, is the condition where you are unable to lift your arm past a certain height. It seems to just get “stuck” at some point. Sometimes there is pain, in other cases the condition is pain free. Frozen shoulder can be very frustrating and quite debilitating. Leading up to the “frozen” state of this condition you may be experiencing arm weakness, numbness, joint pain, and fatigue. Whatever the underlying condition is, whether it is; a tendinopathy, bursitis, cervical spine neuropathy, impingement syndrome, a labrum surgery, etc. the resulting loss of global motion is what leads to the “sticking” of the joint capsule. Have you ever heard the phrase, “If you don’t use it, you lose it” before? In no case is it more evident than with Frozen shoulder patients. They’ve had a previous condition that caused them pain and loss of motion. Over time adhesions built up on the un-stretched capsule and stuck. What a trained professional such as a Chiropractor well versed in myofascial techniques can do for you is to increase capsule movement, restore the joint motion that has been lost, and then address what caused your loss of motion in the first place. Generally the longer someone has been suffering from Frozen Shoulder the longer it will take to treat and restore function.
