Plantar Fasciitis – What a Pain in the…Foot

Plantar Fasciitis causes extreme, excruciating pain on the bottom of your foot. If you haven’t experienced this painful condition it is hard to imagine just how sharp and stabbing it can be. Plantar Fasciitis can feel like someone is shoving an ice pick directly into the meaty part of your foot. So what’s going on? What caused this painful condition to affect you?

Well, to understand what caused the Plantar Fasciitis we need to know what the Plantar Fascia is and does. The Plantar Fascia is a dense band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from the heel to the base of your toes. It acts as support and helps with passive propulsion when walking or running. If the muscles within the foot are de-conditioned to a point where the majority of the stress from walking is placed on passive structures such as the Plantar Fascia over time this can lead to tiny tears within the Plantar Fascia. This is the cause of Plantar Fasciitis (Inflammation of the Plantar Fascia).

What can you do to treat or better yet prevent this painful condition from ever happening to you? Well, treatment starts with damage control; whether that is using therapies or modalities, ice, rest, and rehab. Once the inflammation has calmed down it is time to restore length and balance to Fascia, foot, and globally to the ankle. This is accomplished using myofascial release techniques, intrinsic foot muscle strengthening exercises, and global mobility and stability. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you believe that you are starting to develop Plantar Fasciitis, (usually you’ll feel the sharpest pain first thing in the morning) seek treatment and guidance to save yourself a very painful experience.
