Do you enjoy napping? Or do you wake up from naps feeling groggy and disoriented? Either way, we’re going to give you the deets on napping and how to achieve the best nap ever. Naps can be classified as daytime sleeping lasting anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes. Naps lasting 20-30 minutes are generally the most effective and can even be as restorative as a whole night’s sleep, for some. 

Here are some of the benefits that CAN come from napping:  

  • Relaxation

  • Reduced fatigue

  • Reduced stress

  • Increased alertness

  • Improved mood

  • Improved performance – quicker reaction time, better memory, creativity and focus, less confusion and less accidents and mistakes

  • Lower rates of cardiovascular disease and inflammation

Not a fan of naps? Well you may be experiencing some of these drawbacks: 

  • Sleep inertia 

  • Night time sleeping problems (insomnia)  

If napping comes naturally to you, then you probably don’t fall into a deep slumber. This results in you waking up feeling energized and alert. On the other hand, non-habitual ‘nappers’ may fall into a deep sleep which results in them waking up feeling groggy. But fret not; there are ways to teach yourself to become a better ‘napper’! Here are some tips: 

  • Make them short – try napping for just 15 minutes at first!

  • The afternoon, around 2:00-3:00 pm, is an ideal time snooze (to fight off post-lunch sleepiness and lower levels of alertness)

  • Make sure you’re in a restful environment (quiet, dark, comfortable temperature with no distractions)

If you’ve tried all these things before and still don’t care for napping, it’s OK – everyone is different. Just be sure you’re getting enough sleep throughout the night. And if you have made napping a habit, don’t forget to allow yourself some time to wake up post nap. Your brain and body may need some time to recover ☺
